Exciting News for Horse Racing: WTP Bit with Brakes and Bit with Brakes Ring Bit Now Legal in NZ and Australia

Horse racing enthusiasts, rejoice! There’s been a significant update in the racing regulations of both New Zealand and Australia. The WTP (Winning Tongue Plate) Bit with Brakes and Bit with Brakes Ring Bit, have officially been approved for use in horse racing, allowing trainers and jockeys more options when it comes to ensuring their horses are comfortable and competitive on the track.

Although we a waiting on NZTR to update their gear list from 2018, they are following the 2024 updated Australian Racing approved Gear List which contains the WTP Bit with Brakes range.

What Does This Mean for Racing?

The inclusion of these bits (both the Normal Plate and the Extended Plate) into the approved racing gear list marks an important step in evolving our approach to horse welfare.

The WTP Bit with Brakes is effective because it enhances communication between horse and rider by providing a more refined control mechanism. Its design allows for subtle cues, enabling jockeys to convey their intentions clearly without causing excessive pressure or discomfort to the horse’s mouth which can lead to a fight between horse and rider.

The Extended Tongue Plate also gives trainers an alternate option to tongue tying for horses that continuously get their tongue over the bit.

This can be particularly beneficial in high-speed situations where quick adjustments are necessary. By offering a balance between control and comfort, the Bit with Brakes helps maintain the horse’s focus and responsiveness, ultimately contributing to better performance on the track.

A Closer Look at the Gear Lists

Both the New Zealand and Australian racing authorities have updated their gear lists to include these bits, which is a testament to the ongoing commitment to improving safety and performance in the sport (NZ to still print updated version).

By incorporating innovative equipment like the WTP Bit with Brakes and the Ring Bit with Brakes, trainers can now tailor their gear to better suit individual horses’ needs, ensuring a more personalised approach to training and racing.

Final Thoughts

As we embrace these changes, it’s essential for all participants to stay informed about the latest regulations and gear updates. These developments not only enhance the competitive nature of horse racing but also prioritise the welfare of our equine athletes.

Whether you’re a trainer, owner, or fan, keep an eye on these advancements as we move forward in the exciting world of horse racing!
