WTP Half Cheek EP
PLEASE NOTE THE HALF CHEEK EP IS NOT LEAGAL FOR DRESSAGE.
Half cheek bits, sometimes known as spoon bits due to their flared branch resembling a spoon, feature a single downward-extending arm from the rings, in contrast to full cheek bits with tapered branches.
The Half Cheek EP enhances lateral action on direct rein aids, applying pressure to the horse’s face to help with turning, which appeals to riders and trainers alike. The Extended Plate (also known as the EP) removes the need for tongue tying in horses that consistently get their tongue over the bit.
The Half Cheek EP is less likely to catch on equipment compared to full cheek bits, due to having one less arm. Additionally, half cheek designs prevent the bit from sliding sideways in the horse’s mouth when reins are pulled.
These bits are popular in driving for their compatibility with harnesses and in racing for their gentleness on sensitive mouths. The WTP bit design prevent pinching of the tongue, roof rubbing and poor contact. The unique mouth piece reduces the bit pressure by unto 85% and with the arms having limited movement the pressure placed on the horse’s cheeks is also reduced.
Fitting the Half Cheek EP – Like regular bits, look for 1-2 wrinkles in the skin at the corner of the mouth with around 5mm either side of the mouth to prevent rubbing. The WTP logo should be facing the roof of the horses mouth.
